“650 Years on the Book Duty” Jubilee has started

The opening ceremony of the Jubilee Year “650 Years on the Book Duty” took place in the Warsaw Bookseller’s Club on December 12th, 2013. The year 2014 shall consist of numerous events promoting books, reading, and knowledge of book-related professions.

The ceremony was attended by Bogdan Zdrojewski, Minister for Culture and National Heritage, and Agnieszka Celedy-Honkisz, director of the Culture and Heritage Office in the President Chancellery. Official guests and representatives of book-related professions were welcomed by Elżbieta Stefańczyk, President of the Polish Librarians’ Association, leading the Organizational Committee works. Presenting the idea of jubilee, and encouraging to participation, she officially informed about starting the webpage at the PLA portal: www.sbp.pl/650.

Minister Bogdan Zdrojewski presented general assumptions of the National Program of Reading Promotion for the Years 2014-2020. 15 subprojects of the Program shall amount to 1 bln PLN, including 661 mln from the Ministry.

What is important for our profession, the amount for purchasing new releases for libraries shall reach 35 mln PLN annually. The libraries can also expect improvements in infrastructure and trainings concerning ICT or books’ availability. The Minister declared efforts concerning the lowest possible VAT for e-books and journals at the European Union.

Reading decrease has already stooped (on a low level), however it is time to reverse this tendency. Let the year 2014, celebrated in this particular way, become the first one when reading indicators increase – said the minister.

After the ceremony Andrzej Tomaszewski, outstanding typographic and book artist, gave the lecture “Valuable contents in a beautiful shape”, with multimedia presentation, and then Andrzej Skrzypczak Ph.D. talked about genesis of the Bookseller’s Day on December 13th. The opening ceremony of the Jubilee Year “650 Years on the Book Duty” took place on the eve of the Bookseller’s Day.
